Plans to “upscale, increase the workforce and build export potential”

WS Rothband is one of the UK’s largest suppliers of X-ray protection equipment for the healthcare and nuclear industries.

Jobs at the historic medical supplies company were saved thanks to a buyout by its former sales manager, Paul Dixon. Managing Director, Paul now aims to create five further engineering and manufacturing roles in the next three years.

The businessman, who began his career as an NHS radiographer in 1999, said: “I am thrilled to be able to keep the manufacture of medical goods in Rossendale and look forward to an exciting time ahead upscaling the business, increasing the workforce and building the export potential of this exciting niche company.”

He added that if he had not bought the company, it might have had to be sold to a competitor outside the region, meaning the loss of northwest jobs. Paul was WS Rothband’s sales manager and product trainer from 2002 to 2007 and then worked for several multinationals.

He said: “The company has been run very well but I could really see the advantages of my global marketing experience in taking it forward.”

The new boss is also donating equipment to a hospital in Uganda which he says only has a one-room department with no real X-ray equipment. He said: “We are more digital in the UK now so I think it’s great to give the equipment we don’t need to a good home rather than just putting it in a skip.”

County Councillor Niki Penney, chairperson of Lancashire County Developments Ltd, said she was pleased the business would stay in Lancashire, near to world class university engineering facilities’ and ‘retaining its skilled workforce’.
