Richard Manley

Richard Manley is a founding Director of Seneca Partners. He was named Managing Partner in 2016. He qualified as a chartered accountant with KPMG in 2003. He worked for KPMG for over 5 years, initially in their audit business and latterly in their corporate recovery division working on financial and operational restructurings and formal insolvencies. In 2007, Richard joined NM Rothschild’s leveraged finance team in Manchester before joining Cenkos Fund Managers in June 2008. During his time with Cenkos Fund Managers, manager of a £60m pre-IPO investment fund, Richard gained extensive experience of flotations, fundraisings, mergers, acquisitions and restructurings. Richard holds a BSc (Hons) in Mathematics from the University of Birmingham.

Michael spent the first 28 years of his business career with Arthur Andersen during which time he rose to UK regional and senior managing partner responsible for 3,500 people, 11 offices and a turnover in excess of £350m. In 2001 he founded a range of businesses focused on healthcare and property. Since 2009 Michael has been Chairman of One Medical, a developer of healthcare premises and One Medicare, a primary care service provider.

Steve qualified as a chartered accountant in 1986 before joining Charterhouse Securities as a building and construction analyst, later becoming a managing director and head of research. In 2000 and 2001 he was voted ‘Number One Construction Analyst’ in the Reuters survey for UK smaller companies. Steve set up his own consultancy business in early 2003, co-founded Seneca Partners and sits on a number of private company boards. Steve is a director of Seneca and responsible for property lending. When not watching sport, he enjoys playing tennis and golf as well as skiing and socialising.

Ian was one of the founders of Seneca Partners in 2010. Using his extensive experience in corporate banking and wealth management, Ian’s role as Business Development Director involves product and strategy development and responsibility for Seneca’s relationships with banks, institutions and wealth managers.

Robert is Chairman of Mears Group Plc in which he had a controlling interest in Mears at the time of the flotation in October 1996. He has a background in developing support service businesses, and has operated in the service sector since 1981, initially in a financial capacity before moving into general management.

Richard joined Seneca as non-executive director in February 2014. He was previously Managing Director of Neales Waste Management until July 2012 when he completed a sale of the business. Having started the company with 6 employees and built it into a multi-site operation employing 150 people offering a complete range of series in waste and recycle management. In 1991, he became Director of Blackburn Rovers FC and later took up the role of Vice Chairman overseeing the strategies and operation of the club. Richard currently holds the position of Chairman of Northcote Leisure Group which consists of Northcote Hotel Limited and Ribble Valley Inn. Together with the board of directors they are in the process of expanding both sides of the business.

Ian qualified as a chartered accountant in 1986 with KPMG and has been involved in corporate finance with Peel Hunt & Co, Apax Partners & Co and Altium Capital. Ian sits on the Board of Hedley & Co Stockbrokers, is a founder and majority shareholder of Liberty SIPP who manage in excess of £1 billion of assets, is a partner of Palatine Private Equity LLP and is on the Board of Trustees for the Lowry Arts Centre in Salford, Manchester.

Tim commenced his finance career with Barclays in 1983 where he fulfilled various corporate and credit roles, before joining County Natwest in 1990 where he held a number of positions in structured and acquisition finance.

In 1993, Tim joined the Royal Bank of Scotland’s fledgling Acquisition Finance business, initially establishing the Leeds office. He was subsequently responsible for all UK regional teams before in 2002, founding RBS Corporate & Structured Finance. As Joint Managing Director, he had overall responsibility for the National Mid-Cap structured finance business, whilst also being a member of the Banks Corporate Credit Committee.

In 2005, Tim was hired by Deloitte (Manchester) as a corporate finance partner with the remit to establish the National Debt Advisory business, advising on capital raising and stressed debt refinancing.

Gordon qualified as a chartered accountant in 1989 and has over 15 years’ experience in corporate finance lead advisory services. Gordon was a partner at RSM Robson Rhodes until 2002 when he joined BDO in Manchester. He successfully established BDO in the North West corporate finance market and was a key member of the National Corporate Finance Operating Board at BDO for more than five years. Gordon’s experience is principally in mid-market lead advisory deals in the £5 million to £50 million range across a broad range of sectors. Gordon is a FCA and gained a BA (Econ) Hons in accounting and Business Finance from the University of Manchester.

Norman qualified as an Accountant in 1981. Since that time he has worked as a Management Consultant for Price Waterhouse and has held various board level positions in manufacturing companies. In 2005, he completed a Masters Degree in Finance and Accounting and he is an FCA Approved Person. Norman founded Acceleris in 2000 to raise finance for start-up and early stage companies. Norman has been advising and securing funding for high growth companies for the last 15 years and has developed an excellent track record of EIS (and latterly SEIS) investing. He has direct experience of the problems facing start-ups and early stage technology companies when raising capital, and continues to be involved in a non-executive or advisory role to several of the companies advised. Norman has built up a strong network of funding sources throughout the UK from high net worth individuals through to larger funding sources.

David joined the board of Seneca Investment Managers as Chief Executive Officer in April 2015.

He has held a range of senior management roles in the investment industry, including Head of UK Retail at Momentum Global Investment Management, Chief Executive at Alexander Investment (Holdings) Limited, Business Development Director at Midas Capital Partners Limited and Head of Research at Rensburg. Prior to this, David was an investment analyst at Cazenove and Flemings.

David graduated in Modern History from Wadham College, Oxford in 1986. He is a member of the Liverpool University Pension Fund Advisory Committee, and has been elected a Fellow of the Royal Asiatic Society.

Peter’s research responsibility for Seneca IM is asset allocation. Having joined the team as global investment strategist in November 2014, Peter was appointed chief investment officer in April 2015 and to the board of the company in January 2016. Peter was appointed as a fund manager on the Seneca Global Income & Growth Trust plc in March 2016. He has previously worked in investment roles at Mercury and Aberdeen, largely based in Asia. Peter graduated in Oriental Studies from Trinity College, Cambridge in 1988. He enjoys running, photography and science.
